Reuben G.J. Andrews


Reuben G.J. Andrews has over twenty-five years of experience in banking having held various senior executive roles in international and regional banks in Africa. Reuben was the Chief Risk Officer (CRO), Africa of United Bank for Africa Group, a role he held for close to eight years. He combined this role with that of Director of the Basel 11 & 111 Programme (francophone subsidiaries) of the Group. As the CRO, he provided strategic leadership, oversight of risk management, corporate governance, compliance, credit appraisal and credit recovery for nineteen subsidiaries in Anglophone, Francophone, Lusophone countries in West, East, Central & Southern Africa. In this role Reuben visited the countries regularly and engaged with clients of the bank subsidiaries, top representatives (including Presidents) of Governments, Regulators, Banking Industry, Private Sector and other external counterparties.

Most recently, Reuben transitioned to establishing an independent Financial Services/Banking, Business, Investment, Markets, Leadership & Management Consultancy. He was also linked to collaborators in Middle East & Asia as well as Latin America in the preparatory phase of setting up Consult2ConquerChallenges (C2CC) in Financial Services, Investment, Business, Markets & Management. The blueprint for this venture originated from him as the co-CEO designate.

Prior to his role as the CRO Africa of UBA Group, Reuben was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UBA Guinea and Senegal, Regional Director of Credit, Chief Credit Officer, Africa and Group Head, Group Credit & Business Assurance, a role in which he covered twenty country subsidiaries and those in London, New York, Paris and Dubai. Prior to UBA, Reuben worked for Standard Chartered Bank for over thirteen years in Wholesale Banking in The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe in various senior roles. Reuben started his banking career in Banque Internationale du Commerce et de l’Industrie du Senegal (BICIS), a BNP subsidiary, in Dakar and later as General Manager, The Gambia.

Reuben started his career in the Civil Service where he held positions ranging from Assistant Secretary to Ag. Deputy Permanent Secretary in strategic ministries and organizations such as Parliament/President’s Office, Ministries of Works & Communications, Finance & Economic Affairs and Trade, Investment, Industry, Economic Integration & Employment where he was in charge of African Economic Integration. Reuben is a perfectly bilingual (English and French) and is learning Portuguese and Swahili.

Reuben holds a Master of Arts (Public Policy & Management) from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS),The Hague, Netherlands and a Bachelor of Arts from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone. He is also an alumnus of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Institute, Washington D.C. where he obtained a Diploma in Techniques of Financial Analysis & Programming.

In his role as Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) and Chief Risk Officer (CRO, Reuben will report functionally to the Board and administratively to the CEO and is a member of the Board and SMT. His core responsibilities will be (i) provision of overall leadership and direction for the risk management, internal control, corporate governance, compliance & regulatory affairs functions. (ii) carrying out all necessary activities to ensure that the AIF’s enterprise risks are mitigated and managed by the various functions in line with AIF’s Risk Management Policies and Procedures (RMPP), (iii) installation of a highly effective risk management, compliance framework and process as well as a robust control environment and (iv) developing and maintaining an effective risk management system.

Reuben’s appointment is effective March 30, 2020
