Mr. James Orehmie Monday visited Sierra Leone from 12 to 14 February 2020, for his first official mission as Chief Executive Officer of the Africa Infrastructure Fund (AIF). He met with officials, including President Julius Maada Bio; Minister of Finance, Jacob Jusu Saffa; Presidential Adviser on Economic and Financial Policy, Joe Demby; Chairman – Presidential Infrastructure Initiative, Dr John E. Tambi; and the Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr.

Mr. Monday concluded his visit with a private meeting with key business, finance and bank executives. This visit gave Mr. Monday the opportunity to introduce the AIF concept and investment strategy to President Bio and key decision makers. Equally important, the visit gave him a chance to gain more insight into the country’s investment climate, as well as the government’s macroeconomic strategy, policies, and plans for economic growth and poverty reduction. Other areas of interest included sustainable development of the country’s vast natural resources, project finance and risk management, and a priority list of infrastructure projects.

“My visit to Freetown over the last couple of days reminded me of the resilience and unbridled optimism of the people of Sierra Leone, which is awe- inspiring. I welcome this wonderful opportunity for the AIF and the Government of Sierra Leone to work together to help address the country’s critical infrastructure needs for the benefit of the people of Sierra Leone” Mr. Monday said as he departed Freetown.

The Africa Infrastructure Fund has a continent-wide mandate to operate and invest in infrastructure in Africa. Having initially rolled out in The Gambia, the AIF will now extend to Sierra Leone, thereby ensuring a suite of sector-diverse and risk-balanced portfolio of investment projects, from multiple countries for our first (AIF1) funding cycle.

The AIF looks forward to successfully delivering this pipeline working closely with governments (national and sub national), the private sector, local communities and other stakeholders. It also intends to roll out in more countries across the continent in due course.
